What is erectile dysfunction?

Erection problems affect 1 in 4 of us – but when it’s your erection that’s not working, knowing why it’s happening can be the biggest help of all...

It's a fact that erections can often be unreliable and most men will experience problems at one time or another. This may range from a penis that isn't hard enough to have sex to an erection that gives up halfway through - or perhaps an erection that doesn’t happen at all.

If the problem only happens occasionally, you can safely say it's just one of those things, but if a one-off incident becomes a regular event, it might be caused by erectile dysfunction (ED) – and that won’t go away on its own.

At this point, it's important to have a chat with your doctor. ED is quite often a symptom of another medical, physical or emotional condition – it may even be the first symptom.

Did you know the average guy waits two years before going to his doctor about sexual problems? So by getting them checked out early, you could stop an undiagnosed problem getting worse.

How erections work.

When a man is aroused, two large chambers in the penis fill up with blood. They block the veins that allow blood to flow out, and that's what gives you an erection.

This means that, to have an erection, you need an unrestricted flow of blood to the penis and healthy circulation. If you've got health issues that interfere with either of these, such as heart disease or diabetes, you’re more likely to have problems.
